Arden Anlian and Stephanie Parris met each other last June. Seeing them together it seems like they have been friends for years. Stephanie is in the 11th grade at McKinley Technical High School, and her mentor, Arden, is a graduate of George Washington University and currently working in Washington, D.C. After graduating, Arden wanted to give back to the community and especially wanted volunteer opportunity where she could build a relationship in the process. She heard about Mentors, Inc. through a roommate and quickly joined the program, "I believe I got the golden ticket by meeting Stephanie. She is very giving, personable and smart, and has such a positive outlook on life."

Stephanie and Arden meet often for breakfast, dinner and watching movies. Both have read the book, Lovely Bones, and share it as one of their favorites, so their plan is to watch the movie as soon as it comes out. When they got together to bake cookies for her father's birthday, Arden relayed, Stephanie had to save her from some not-so-great cookie dough that she had prepared by herself. "I actually feel sometimes like I am the protégé, instead of her! She is such a mature 17-year-old person. I learn from her all the time."
Both have friendly, charismatic personalities, so it's no wonder they get along so well. Stephanie says she has learned how to open up and share her feelings and goals with Arden. After her sister went away to college this year, Stephanie wanted a mentor to have someone to talk to and spend time with. She misses her sister very much, but at the same time, feels very fortunate to have met Arden. "She is very warm, nice and fun," says Stephanie.
And for future goals? For now, Stephanie is focusing on graduating high school, and afterwards, going to college. She hasn't exactly figured out what her career goals are yet, but thinks about becoming an artist. Whatever path she chooses though, there is no doubt she wouldn't miss an opportunity to continue her education. She also knows that Arden will always be there to help her find her way. "The possibilities are endless for Stephanie," says Arden. |
